SEARCHING FOR THE UNDERGROUND

Kate Moore is a composer fascinated by experiences in nature, which she incorporates into her compositions. During her artist residency at Ode aan de gemeenschap, Moore draws inspiration from the communal courtyard of the Van der Pek housing block. What is happening beneath the ground? Using audio equipment, she explores the hidden sounds of this world. At the same time, the project brings her into close contact with everyday life in the Van der Pek block. The sounds from the neighbouring apartments converge in the courtyard, creating a unique experience of connection that only the composer can perceive, as the residents themselves do not have access to the courtyard. The results of this artistic research are presented in the exhibition. Moore’s preliminary research will ultimately lead to The Underground: An Unseen Opera, a project to be presented at the Oranjewoud Festival in Friesland in May 2027.

ODE AAN DE GEMEENSCHAP
Ode aan de Gemeenschap is a year-long programme at De Poorthuisjes. It brings together artists and local residents in four artist-in-residency programmes, which explore the contemporary meaning of community from different perspectives. Participants: Roberta Maimone (dancer and choreographer), Jatiwangi Art Factory, Kate Moore (composer), Mangano & Van Rooy (artist duo). You can get involved in the project by taking part in the Klazien-o-theek.
DE POORTHUISJES
De Poorthuisjes are two former gatehouses of the Van der Pek housing block. Built in 1912, the buildings are now used for art and community projects in Amsterdam Oost. De Poorthuisjes are operated by Stichting LOLA.
